Savannah
Savannah is an incredibly fun destination and Chef and the Fat Man are here to help you make your trip to Savannah much more worth while and more fun! Below are the "Chef's Picks" with web sites as available. Now PLEASE REMEMBER these are the selections that we TRIED and LIKED however, there are literally hundreds of restaurants and bars as well as numerous competing companies. We offer you the "picks" as SUGGESTIONS only to maximize your time and fun....I hope you find Savannah as much fun as we did....Enjoy and "CELEBRATE THE GOOD LIFE"!
Savannah Convention and Visitors Bureau - This should be your FIRST STOP. They will assist you in every way possible!
Hotel - As always we look for the most convenient and the best to the center of the "action" as well as ABOVE average accommodations. Our choice.....Hyatt Regency Hotel....Right on River St on the lower end and Bay St on the top end....
Breakfast - Huey's.....2 minutes from the hotel on River St., yes they are part of the Atlanta group however, they have a steady management and staff which provides great food at a great price....i.e. 8 0z ribeye and 2 eggs cooked any way $8.95.....GREAT beignets.....
Early morning stroll/bakery - B. Matthews Bakery....Far east end of Bay St....This quaint bakery is a 10 minute walk from the Hyatt open at 6 am with great bakery and lunch items....only open 4 months already receiving rave reviews....a great alternative for the bigger breakfast.
Chef's Pick Dinner on Tybee Island - Fannie's on the Beach....Located in the heart of downtown Tybee Island right across from the beach with an upstairs deck open on selected days...Very casual and eclectic but FUN, DELICIOUS, and REASONABLE...Try the pizzas or the Mahi salad.....Lot's O' Fun....
Chef's Pick Seafood Dinner on the River Walk - Fiddler's....HUGE PORTIONS....for $24.95 Seafood Platter....everyone had a good meal and we went home with 3 BIG take out boxes.....Grouper fingers were very good! Check out local tourist magazines for specials.....
Chef's Pick TOUR LINE - Old Town Trolley....They are clean efficient and they teach you a lot about the city....Get the on/off pass good from 8:30 to 4 pm and use them instead of your car....Parking is horrible....We tried all three major lines....they are all pretty good....
Chef's Pick for Haunted Tour - Hearse Haunted Tour.....Yes, you get up to 8 in a REAL Hearse and they take you all around the city at night....errie music and a good tour guide make it fun and different....Open air (unless cold or wet) and they can drop down plastic sheets....they take you through the oldest cemetery and you will or should get one good AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH....
Chef's Pick for Cigar Store - The Tinder Box....Very good selection, seating with TV for a break and John and Elizabeth are friendly and helpful....Pinkie the bull dog snores but you'll get over it.....
Chef's Pick Pub/Entertainment - Kevin Barry's.....Only a 2 minute walk from the hotel....However, they have traditional Pub Food from Fish n Chips to Shepard's Pie etc.....The live entertainment Harry O' Donoghue is a very talented musician but also funny and witty....Harry plays in Atlanta at Fado's in Buckhead once a month....$2.00 to listen but well worth it....I know my Irish roots are showing!
Chef's Pick Hotel cuisine - If you don't want to stray to far....Window's in the Hyatt Regency is a great destination....Award winning Executive Chef Gidget Wickham is a real pro that will please your palate and you can watch the ships heading out to the ocean right from your seat.....
Chef's Pick for Oysters on the Half Shell - Oyster Bar on River St. about a 5 minute walk from the hotel....They are the biggest, freshest and coldest we found....Good bar and decent food, good ambiance...Touristy but fun.....
Chef's Pick for Charter Boat fishing - .Without a doubt the best "if you can book her" is Miss Judy Charters....She is called the Grande Dame of the Savannah Snapper Banks....With good reason, 35 years of experience and her father STARTED the Charter Boat business in the Savannah area years ago....Captain Judy and her mate/captain of 21 years Allie will amaze you....and hurt you.....ALL FORMS OF CHARTER are available through Capt. Judy Charters.....Gulf Stream, inshore, offshore, the Banks etc.....She does it all!
Chef's Pick the River - Boat Cruise on the River Walk you can't miss it....Very relaxing and informative one hour cruise....with longer dinner cruises available....This was great relaxation.....Try it!
Chef's Pick Dolphin Tour - .....We liked Dolphin Magic Tour as we went out for the 1 1/2 hour tour....Great history lesson as well as we saw plenty of frolicking bottle nosed dolphins and yes we saw "pods" with babies....It was fun and entertaining.....
We were there for 5 days and thanks to the great folks as SCVB we were able to try a lot of things....We didn't even get a chance to check out the museums which are many and interesting....So much to do so little time! I hope you find this helpful and gets you started. It takes only 3 1/2 to 4 hours drive from Woodstock but well worth it.
Remember the restaurants on River St. are TOURISTY but you can get decent food....Watch out for the prices and read the menus and observe before you try....It can get costly if your not careful!
Please check with the Savannah Convention and Visitors Bureau as you will save yourself a lot of hassle and time...They REALLY can help!
